Earlier this year, before the world went into lockdown due to the pandemic, Joe Pugliese photographed Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House. On assignment for Variety Magazine, Pugliese worked with photo director Jennifer Dorn to capture a day in the life of Congresswoman Pelosi.
“[Pelosi was] really gracious and really eager to give us a tour” Pugliese remarked. Shot in multiple locations, throughout her office and the Capitol building, the biggest challenge was having limited time for each shot. However, it felt important to capture distinct moments, such as Pelosi at her desk, walking the halls, to capture what it looks like to be her. In fact, it was during her tour that Pelosi showed the team the view from her office, looking down on the national mall, which in turn became a favorite shot from the session. Pugliese, a pro at portrait photogrpahy, brings his belief that you must “treat every subject uniquely [and] meet them where they are” to each shoot.
