Joe Pugliese Doubles Up for Hollywood Reporter
Joe Pugliese photographed a sextet of actresses for two separate Hollywood Reporter covers. Julia Roberts, Emma Thompson, Octavia Spencer, Lupita Nyong'o, Amy Adams, and Oprah Winfrey convened at L.A.'s 5th & Sunset Studios to form this year's Actress Roundtable – an annual gathering that Pugliese has captured before. "These types of shoots can be easier because the group dynamic is strong – they enjoy each other's company and it takes away any nervousness because no one person is the center of attention," he explained. "In this instance, I think the veterans were energized by the newcomers ... and Emma and Julia, for example, were excited to meet the next generation of actors."
Pugliese likened the cover image to an architectural project: "Getting everyone to fit nicely in a vertical frame involves sitting, standing, and different levels. I went in with a plan, but I had to be ready for changes to ensure each person is comfortable and feels natural." He made individual portraits of each actress, too.
Oprah also sat for THR's Women in Entertainment Power 100 Issue. "She's an amazing subject," he remarked. "She's been photographed so often that she knows a lot about the process and what makes a compelling picture." That shoot was a reunion of sorts for the pair. "The first time I photographed Oprah for The Hollywood Reporter, she asked me for a print because she liked the images so much and I sent a framed print to her," Pugliese explained. "She then sent me a nice note and I hadn't seen her since."
