Wayne Maser Subverts Expectation for Vanity Fair

Blogging is no longer a niche hobby preserved by computer nerds plugged into the net in their parents’ basements. Chiara Ferragni has built a fashion empire out of her work on her blog The Blonde Salad, bringing in more than $10m in 2015 as a result of ad revenue as well as various endorsement deals and partnerships based off the vast image network she’s created over the years. Her staff of 20 helps to maintain the constant flow of information and creation of content, ever changing by the industry’s fluctuating demands and shaped by Ferragni’s vision. Wayne Maser photographed Ferragni for a spread in Vanity Fair’s March issue that explains how we got to a place where a blogger under the age of 30 has become one of the fashion world’s most notable It Girls.

Wayne brought his subversive vision to life by photographing Ferragni wearing only a handful of accessories: broad sunglasses, heavy earrings, an elegant pearl bracelet, and a pair of knee high strapped heels. She’s not wearing a stitch of clothing. Ironic considering so much of Ferragni’s work is centered around clothing, but Wayne’s point of view has always been about disrupting expectations and giving more to his audience than their own presumptions. She lays in repose on a couch whose curves and hues match her own, creating a composition that practically smash cuts between Renaissance painting and fashion photography. In one image we have the queen of one of our newest professions reflecting centuries of classic imagery; history sewn together with Wayne’s camera and serving his vision that surpasses our own limited considerations.
