Raised in Northern California, Michael Muller spent much of his childhood in Saudi Arabia where his father, an amateur photographer, oversaw the building of the port city of Jubail. In his mid-teens, with travel to 50 countries under his belt, he began photographing professional snowboarders, inspiring a passion that quickly turned into a profession.
By 22, Michael established himself as one of the leading entertainment and fashion photographers in the game. His celebrity portraits of Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, Jeff Bridges, Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson and hundreds of others, graced the covers and pages of magazines including Vanity Fair, Elle, Rolling Stone, Harper's Bazaar, Flaunt, Filter, Esquire, Interview, and the New York Times Magazine. His work is all over the Billboard 100, creating official art with Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Billy Idol, and more.
He has photographed iconic images for a dizzying array of movie posters, including The Avengers, Inherent Vice, Guardians of The Galaxy, Spiderman, X-Men, Hancock, Tower Heist, Iron Man, Captain America, Spring Breakers and numerous other films. Michael has also worked on numerous TV series such as Entourage, 24, Sons of Anarchy, Nip/Tuck and Spartacus to name a few.
Michael is on the roster for RSA Films, the production company founded by powerhouse directors Ridley Scott and the late Tony Scott. As a director, Michael has helmed TV spots for Converse, HBO, Reebok, Starz, Oakley, Cirque Du Soleil, Stance socks, and Joaquin Phoenix for PETA. He created original sponsored content with Colin Farrell for Flaunt, David Lynch for The New Yorker, Michael Phelps for Speedo, Manny Pacquiao for ESPN, and Celine Cousteau for the Glass Is Life campaign. He also recently directed music videos for One Republic and The Moors. Michael’s other commercial clients include Samsung, Turkish Air, Speedo, Nike, Billabong, Oakley, Range Rover, Dodge, Fila, Von Zipper, and IWC watches.
Michael’s work took a deep dive into the ocean, coming face to face with sharks in an expansive exploration of the world under the waves. He created his own specially calibrated strobe lighting rig for the project that brought him all over the world, revealing the planet’s favorite cold blooded predator in entirely new ways. The collection of imagery was brought together into a book with Taschen.
Michael’s iPhone app – MullerPhoto – helps users edit their photos in his iconic style, and will soon launch Photoschool.com, an online photo-teaching site. Plus, his online photography courses at Photo School, are available to anyone who’s dying to learn the craft from this master.
Michael calls Los Angeles home. He is married with three daughters, three dogs, two cats and a couple of chickens. Michael's passion for the art and commerce of photography is obvious in his work. He says, “When people view my work, I simply want to evoke emotion, and let the viewer feel they are in fact ALIVE.”
