Tom Corbett Captures Mother and Child for Ippolita
Ippolita tapped Tom Corbett to photograph a handful of mother-child pairings ahead of Mother's Day. "The brief was to take several very candid portraits and get the mother and daughter (or mother and son) bond on film," Corbett explained and emphasized the importance of not over-directing. "I gave each woman a loose framework – an image in her mind – and let her act out the scenario until it became a natural, unstaged moment that would speak to people. It took a certain amount of confidence from the women to go with this, and while part of my role is to make them feel comfortable, it's also to step back and capture that special interaction."
Corbett shot in New York City's Dune Studios and "had the run of the place ... they were generous with our team. We found different areas inside of the space and it looked like we were on location, in different houses." He noted that he skipped the ring flashes, instead relying on daylight to illuminate the scenes. "In the end, it really worked."
