Kai & Sunny's New Book Cover on The Daily Show
Kai & Sunny's cover for The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart earlier this week. Stewart's guest on Tuesday was author David Mitchell, who along with his wife KA Yoshida translated the best-seller written by Naoki Higashida.
The host called The Reason I Jump "truly moving, eye-opening, [and] incredibly vivid." Kai Clements told B&A: "I would concur. It's one of the most incredible books I've read." He and Sunny have collaborated with Mitchell multiple times – notably on the book jacket for Cloud Atlas – and their artwork for this text "was a natural progression from what we've created for him in the past," Kai said. "The project came to us a year ago and we were given an open brief. For me, the book is about an autistic child finding refuge in nature, and we used that sort of perspective – and the idea of beauty, but also struggle – to design the cover." The interior images are Kai & Sunny's responses to Naoki's words.
Some of the illustrations from The Reason I Jump are in the duo's L.A. show, "Caught by the Nest," for which Mitchell penned a new short story. "Both the book and the show were put together at the same time – they worked hand-in-hand," Kai explained. He added that their cover was released in the U.K. as well as in the U.S. and Canada, a feat in the publishing biz.
