John Hendrix & The Society of Illustrators

John Hendrix, one of B&A newest/ most well versed talents, recently awarded the Silver Medal for the Society of Illustrators Book Category. John recently gave us a description of his process with the book cover. "The Pull of the Ocean is a translation of a French retelling of “Little Tom Thumb”. So I channeled the Normandy beaches on a grey cold day and made the environment as important as the characters themselves. Though the type went though several variations, this version was my favorite. Drawings that suggest little stories, like this, are really satisfying to me. I know I have done my best when the act of drawing itself is as rewarding as looking at the final image."

Yuko Shimizu & The Society of Illustrators

Yuko Shimizu, prolific artist and professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York, has been all the buzz at the Society of Illustrators, both in New York and Los Angeles. At the Society of Illustrators 48th Annual Exhibition Editorial Category, Yuko won the Gold Medal for Tsunami. A piece commissioned by PLAYBOY magazine for their July 2005 feature article called “7 Deadly Natural Disaster’s”. As well as the Spectrum Fantastic Art Silver Medal for Revenge Of The Geisha Girl, a personal piece commissioned by X Funs, a design magazine published in Taiwan. They wrote an 8 page feature about Yuko‚s work in the same issue, and asked if she‚d pitch a cover with whatever she wanted to draw. The only criteria was to incorporate their magazine title as part of the picture, which she made to look like Japanese calligraphy. At the Society of Illustrators LA, „Illustration West 44 Competition, awarded Yuko with Best of Show/Gold Medal in an Institutional category for Space Boombox, a piece commissioned by NPR for their 2006 illustration calendar. Yuko also walked away with the Silver Medal in Advertising for the Target and New York advertising campaign commissioned by TARGET. More than 20 illustrators were chosen to each do a piece in Target & New York which appeared in the August 2005 advertising issue of The New Yorker.
