Carlo Longo and Flaunt Magazine Bring Us to Another World
The world of fashion offers a dichotomy. It allows us to show ourselves as we are, while at the same time presenting our idealized version of how we see the world. It is both authentically expressive and aspirational in one, which is why it’s so effective. It’s transportative while also bringing us closer to ourselves. It helps us bring us closer to the world we need. Flaunt Magazine’s editorial “When They Told Me I’d Never Be Allowed To Leave This Place, I Rejoiced” plays on these themes, and with makeup by Carlo Longo, brings through the energy and passion of these ideas.
The shoot includes fashion by Hermes, Givenchy, and Proenza Schouler, but draws its strength off the otherworldly quality of the scenes that are set. Presented entirely in black and white on sand dunes with water, sky, and reeds as the background, the contrast of high fashion with the weathered location is stirring. The looks are equally soft and severe, and Carlo’s work fits right in. Bold shadowed eyes pop off a subtly touched face. In an atmosphere as specific as the one created for this shoot, Carlo’s design is exacting, showing us what we need to see and letting the rest speak for itself. It implies the inner life of the model and her experience, without giving us too much information. We’re offered the tip of inspiration, but maintain the crucial element of mystery.
