Dora Roberti Perfects the Side Braid for GIOIA
B&A new talent Dora Roberti devised a simultaneously sensible and aspirational hairstyle for this week's issue of GIOIA – the perfectly messy side braid. "We shot the editorial, 'Viaggio Leggera' ['Travel Light'], in Milano Malpensa Airport and it follows a woman who is both fashionable and comfortable," Roberti said. "I wanted her hair to look like she could have done it herself."
Using Bumble and bumble Styling Creme, Roberti blow-dried and diffused the model's hair with her hands, giving it a crunchy texture. She then started the plait facing the model and pulled pieces toward her shoulder. "Braid in the direction you want it to go in," Roberti advised. "If you want a side braid, don't braid from the back and pull it forward." She left it loose and applied Bumble and bumble Hair Powder in Brown, and added accessories – including a headband, bandanna, and cap.
Born in Sicily, Roberti moved to Florence at 19 to enroll in hairstyling school. In two years' time, she was managing a salon, but decided to relocate to London, where she assisted the biggest talents in her field. Come 2010, she went out on her own, moving to Milan to contribute to Italian publications such as Vogue Italia, Vogue Gioiello, and Vogue Accessory.
Roberti currently resides in Manhattan and pushes boundaries for international clients like Elle, Dazed & Confused, Muse, Crash, Elle Mexico, Elle Italia, GQ, and Homme Essential. She is also a regular at New York, London, Milan, and Paris fashion weeks.
