The exhibition is the first in an upcoming series of artistic collaborations throughout 2012 that honor the launch of the Polaroid Classic line. The new product line celebrates the seventy-five year legacy of the instant film and camera company.

The photographs in the show were captured with the last original Polaroid Spectra film production from 2008. Baseman explains his image process as, “I wanted to use the camera the way I originally used such a device in the 1970s and 80s…to capture an immediate memory. My art is about discovering one’s “True Self,” and Polaroid cameras have been an important tool in assisting in this truth-finding and free expression.”

“Instant Revolution” opens at Impossible Project Space NYC on February 9th. Find out more information about the show here.

The special Arts section features spring’s most anticipated events in theater, film, art, dance, and music recommended by the newspaper’s staff.

The Washington Post wanted the cover to feel alive and fresh, and evoke the exciting feeling of the start of spring. Harrison designs her work on the computer first, so there is opportunity for changes before she commits the art to paper. In this piece she tried a few single color/gradient grounds in spring shades but they felt a little flat. Susana Sanchez, the Art Director at The Washington Post, suggested photographing the paper-cut on a grass background, as that was something Harrison had experimented with before. She ended up shooting it outside on natural grass and on Astroturf.

The Spring Arts Preview was part of The Washington Post’s Sunday issue.

Serial Cut designs the campaign for the new Toyota Prius V. Saatchi & Saatchi LA commissioned the Madrid-based studio for Toyota USA. It is the biggest campaign Serial Cut has ever put together. The visuals highlight three features of the new Prius V: more versatility, efficiency, and connectivity. It took several months of pre-production, a six-day photo shoot and two months of post-production to complete the design.

Serial Cut used a youthful, vibrant, and highly contemporary approach to express the essence of the new Prius V and its themes through 3D visuals. Versatility is explained by the large amount of space available in the trunk. A myriad of colorful objects, from kids and dogs to balloons and topiaries, are shown flowing from the car. Efficiency is demonstrated by showing the multitude of activities one could do on the car’s exceptional fuel efficiency. Finally, the new Prius V offers mobiles apps like Bing, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable, and Pandora through the Entune system. Visualizing all the apps attached to the car shows the new connectivity. Each object flowing from the open trunk was photographed several times to emphasize the three themes.

HAZE X Heineken includes two glasses and an original print numbered and hand signed by Haze. The set, while intentionally minimalist in its graphic elements, also reflects a lot of form married to function and modern production values in the creation of its glass and packaging.

The exclusive piece allowed Haze to showcase his signature creation, The Imperfect Star. It is featured alongside Heineken’s signature star logo—the “perfect” star. The glasses were shaped and then laser etched on the bottom to ensure a perfect pour every time. The inclusion of an embossed old style letterpress insert is designed to reinforce its fundamental identity as an art object. Haze calls the set “a truly collectable one-off piece.”

250 sets will be given away as part of the Heineken Klout Perks program.

Every year, The Society of Illustrators honors the best achievements in illustration from the past year in an exhibition. B&A’s John Hendrix and Andrew Bannecker are among those selected this year for “Illustration 54: America’s Original Annual of Illustration.” The jury selected nine of Hendrix’s illustrations and eight of those will be exhibited across all the categories. Two of Bannecker’s illustrations were selected.

Hendrix’s work represents a wide range in his professional life, advertising campaigns, children’s books and editorial work with clients including AT&T, Rolling Stone and Random House. Three of his illustrations for A Boy Called Dickens, a type piece, and a Rolling Stone trivia series are in the show. Hendrix says it is always an honor to be a part of the annual show but that this year is “particularly special,” for the number of his pieces included.

Bannecker’s two pieces for the show are a non-commissioned illustration called “Night Falls” and an advertising piece called “Wish.” “Wish” was created for the American Cancer Society. The piece represents “the birthdays that cancer survivors are celebrating thanks to cancer research.”

The Society of Illustrators Annual Show will open on January 4th, 2012.

Nick & Chloe and FWY Studios work together to bring to life the colorful characters of Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku Mini line for Target. The line caters to children, from infants to tweens, and features tutus, plaids, punk pants, and faux leather jackets. The collaborative effort between the B&A talents mixes photography and CGI to create a fun, colorful campaign. Nick & Chloe photographed the campaign on the streets of Tokyo’s Harajuku and Akihabara (“The Electric City”) districts. FWY Studios created the 3D CGI icons that appear in the print ads as well as the original Harajuku characters for the television spots.

The campaign’s concept was to reflect the colorful chaos of the streets and to make them a magical place where strange icons come to life with Harajuku dolls looking on. The challenge was to capture the kids appearing happy and having fun while the heat and humidity were high and fairly unbearable. Nick & Chloe say they had great help from FWY Studios who created the dolls and the icons “with great graphic style and panache.”

The Harajuku Mini for Target campaign is out now.

The animations tie together traditional Chinese folklore stories and GE’s modern technologies with a twist. The first animation follows the story of the epic battle of Red Cliff where Kung Ming and his allies defeating an attacking arming using wind power against their arrows. This well-known story then in turn becomes a metaphor for GE’s use of wind power in the present.

The animation directors and animators at I Love Dust worked closely with the creative at TBWA to bring the script to life. “We were able to use a bunch of new techniques in the creation of this spot and had a ton of fun doing it,” says Ingi Erlingsson, animation director at I Love Dust. “It was a pleasure working with I Love Dust from the initial concept to the final delivery. We were really impressed with the work ethics and creative output from them and am looking forward to opportunities to work together again!” says Dwayne Koh, Creative Director at TBWA.

The next two animations in this series will be launched early November and December.

Located across from the Van Cortlandt Park Cross Country Track, the space is devoted to runners and features custom tees, interactive displays, and running gear. VCXC honors the park’s cross-country heritage and promises to be a community gathering space for local runners. Nike opened similar sports-specific stores in Chicago and California.

Hayes designed branding and map illustrations that decorate the interior and exterior walls of the space. He sketched several potential logo designs before Nike settled on his hand-drawn crest design. Hayes says of the crest, “The playful typography with the silhouetted and iconic tortoise and hare mascots retain the youthfulness and high energy of this sports event.” He adds that he’s extremely happy with how his logo has been used.

Bannecker also created a branded logo for the space as well as playful illustrations that reflect his own style. He combined the head and shell of the tortoise and the hare for one logo and in another, simply had the hare jumping over the VCXC logo. Bannecker’s illustrations are interspersed with Hayes inside and outside the space.

The Nike VCXC space will remain open until the end of cross-country season in December.

The learning center offers tutoring for kids K-12. Nomoco collaborated with the Mullen agency on the advertising campaign. Her illustrations bring learning to life with depictions of wildlife, books, and math. The idea behind the campaign is about giving voice and vision to possibility, to potential. To reveal the benefits that can’t always be seen on paper and to give intangible concepts like curiosity, self-confidence, potential, etc. a representation parents and their children can see and understand.

Nomoco has been experimenting with inks and their organic movement for the past several years. She uses this technique to create the watercolor-like background of the Kumon ads. Nomoco says of the work, “I receive many inspirations from nature and enjoy transferring this on paper in my way. Through this process I hope my picture will connect with children.”
