Stephen Wilkes is a highly recognized art photographer who has had four major exhibitions in the last four years.

In 1999, Wilkes completed a personal project photographing the south side of Ellis Island. Through his photographs and video work, which was presented to Congress, Wilkes was able to help secure $6 million in funding to restore the island.     In 2000 Wilkes was commissioned by Epson America to create a millennial portrait of the United States. Over 52 days, Wilkes crisscrossed the country looking for the people and places that capture the mood of America. The work was exhibited in four cities, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

In 2002, Wilkes exhibited his exploration of the nude form juxtaposed against the jungles and lava flows of Hawaii. In 2004, Wilkes' photographs of the abandoned Bethlehem Steel plant were exhibited in Los Angeles.

Wilkes is also on permanent collection at the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House.
